Year End Accounting…Taking Oneself to Account

As we look back on the year behind us, it's a good time to take a hard look at our wealth and our jobs…

Is my livelihood free of the haram?
Are my assets and investments free of interest?
Have I paid my zakat in full?
Am I paying off loans as quickly as possible?
Have I prepared my last will and testament?
Do I need to return ill-gotten gain to the rightful owner? (e.g. lying about food stamps, interest from the bank, etc.)

“Competing for more distracts you until you go into your graves. No indeed! You will come to know. No indeed! In the end you will come to know. No indeed! If only you knew for certain! You will most definitely see Hellfire. Then you will see it with the eye of certainty. On that Day, you will be asked about your pleasures.” (Koran)

This life is but a passing enjoyment that will soon fade. We hope never to be deluded like the one “…who amasses riches, counting them over, thinking they will make him live for ever."

How often we look back on our youth and it feels just like yesterday; a reminder that, if we are granted a long life, our final years are but as near as tomorrow.
